Green Day to receive Global Icon Awards at 2016 MTV EMAs

Green Day are to receive the Global Icon Award at the 2016 MTV European Music Awards.
The ‘American Idiot’ rockers will be bestowed with the prestigious accolade at a star-studded ceremony held at Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands on Sunday (06.11.16).
The punk rock trio – comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool – will perform on the night and will be joined by the likes of chart-topping rapper G-Eazy, Charli XCX, Tinie Tempah and actor-and-musician Idris Elba, who will be handing out prizes on the night.
Green Day, who have won the MTV EMA Best Rock gong three times in the past, follow in the footsteps of last year’s Global Icon winners Duran Duran.
Past honourees have included Ozzy Osbourne, Eminem, Whitney Houston, Queen and Bon Jovi.
Bruce Gillmer, Executive Vice President of Talent and Music Programming / Events, Viacom International Media Networks, said: "Green Day is without question, one of the worlds’ most influential rock bands. For over 2 decades, they’ve introduced new generations of fans from around the globe to their impassioned lyrics and raw musical power. "We’re incredibly proud to have Green Day as this year’s MTV EMA Global Icon Award honoree."
The ‘Bang Bang’ hitmakers join an already star-studded EMA lineup, which features performances by Bebe Rexha, Bruno Mars, Kings of Leon, OneRepublic, Martin Garrix, Afrojack, Shawn Mendes, DNCE, Lukas Graham and Zara Larsson, with appearances from Jaden Smith, Nina Dobrev, Deepika Padukone, Jourdan Dunn, Winnie Harlow and more.
Further performers and presenters are expected to be announced shortly.
The 2016 MTV EMAs will broadcast live around the globe at 8pm GMT.
