Green Day are to perform at the Super Bowl opening ceremony.
The American Idiot band will play a medley of their biggest hits before the NFL showpiece next month in their home state of California, as past Super Bowl MVPs parade on the field at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
The rockers join Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny on the bill for the Super Bowl, whose selection as the halftime show performer angered US President Donald Trump and other MAGA supporters.
Meanwhile, Charlie Puth will sing the US national anthem and Brandi Carlile will perform America The Beautiful at the big game.
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said: “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard! We are honoured to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”
Tim Tubito, senior director of event and game presentation for the NFL, added: “Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honouring the NFL legends who’ve helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX.
“As we work alongside NBC Sports for this opening ceremony, we look forward to creating a collective celebration for fans in the stadium and around the world.”
Trump had previously slammed the “ridiculous” decision to make Bad Bunny the halftime headliner and even claimed that he had never heard of the Latin mega star.
The White House chief told Newsmax’s Greg Kelly: “I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it – it’s, like crazy.
“They blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
Trump administration officials have also suggested that NFL chiefs will regret their decision to choose Bad Bunny for the halftime show.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said: “They suck, and we’ll win, and God will bless us, and we’ll stand and be proud of ourselves at the end of the day. They won’t be able to sleep at night because they don’t know what they believe, and they’re so weak, we’ll fix it.”
