Greatest Dancer ‘cancelled after two series’

‘The Greatest Dancer’ has been cancelled after two series.
Simon Cowell’s BBC talent show – which was hosted by Alesha Dixon and Jordan Banjo, and featured Cheryl, Matthew Morrison, Oti Mabuse and Todrick Hall as dance captains – won’t be returning for a third season, but the corporation are "proud" of the programme.
A Beeb representative told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: "Whilst there are no plans for a further series, we are proud of the show and would like to thank everyone involved."
According to the publication, the cost of the show was a factor in axing the programme, despite it proving popular with critics and "a younger audience".
A source said: "The writing was on the wall a while back.
"Now the BBC and everyone involved has decided enough is enough and they’ve binned it.
"Critics liked it and it pulled in a younger audience. But the cost of the big production for the ratings the show delivered was too much."
The most recent series was won by Michael and Jowita – who were mentored by Oti – and their victory earned them the £50,000 prize money.
They will also get the opportunity to perform on the upcoming season of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
For Simon, this news comes after ‘The X Factor’ was put on hold by ITV until 2021.
A source previously said: "Simon wants to really think through the show and how to reinvigorate it for the future.
"Although ‘The X Factor’ is contracted for one more series, ITV totally understand the rationale behind the idea of resting it this year and want to give Simon and the team the time to do what they feel is right."
