Great British Bake Off unveils new contestants

A banker, a scientist, and a home brewer are among the contestants for the new series of ‘Great British Bake Off’.
The popular baking competition – which is hosted by Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig – returns to Channel 4 next week and producers have now revealed the 12 hopefuls who’ll be hoping to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with their culinary creations.
Banker Antony, 30, lives in London and describes himself as a "Bollywood baker", who learned to bake with his father while growing up in India.
Rahul, 30, also grew up in India and has an "East-meets-West style" of baking. He is a research scientist and moved to the UK seven years ago on a university scholarship.
And they are not the only contestants to hail from India, as 29-year-old project manager Ruby also grew up there but now lives in London.
Retired cabin crew member Terry, 56, will be turning to his own allotment and microbrewery to find ingredients for his unique creations.
Father-of-four Jon, 47, from Newport, South Wales, turns to baking to relax after a long day at work as a blood courier and is planning to try lots of experimental techniques in the tent, while 27-year-old mental health specialist Kim-Joy – who was born in Belgium – will be drawing on influences from her English father and Malaysian-Chinese mother.
Software project manager Manon, 26, is another contestant who will be taking inspiration from other countries, as she’s planning a heavy influence from her French heritage, as well as the flavours she’s experienced while travelling the world.
Karen, 60, is an in-store sampling assistant who applied for the show on the encouragement of her daughters after discovering her love for baking when she owned a house in France.
Civil servant and techno DJ Luke may only be 30 years old, but he’s got 20 years of experience as he’s been baking since he was just 10.

Countryside recreation officer Imelda, 33, is from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland and was taught her culinary skills by her mother.
Rounding out this year’s line-up are two full-time parents, 33-year-old Briony – who learned her techniques on YouTube – and 36-year-old Dan, who is looking for a break from his kids.
The new series of ‘The Great British Bake Off’ will begin on Channel 4 on August 28 at 8pm.
