Fatboy Slim: Dance music ‘too commercial’

Fatboy Slim claims dance music has become "too commercial",

The veteran DJ – whose real name is Norman Cook – has confessed he feels as though the current popularity of dance music has resulted in pop stars trying to make money by putting a dance spin on their songs.

He explained: "It’s got way too commercial and a lot of that electronic dance stuff really just sounds like pop music with squelchy noises.

"Before the internet it only happened after midnight in nightclubs and no-one really knew what went on."

The 50-year-old star – who is set to perform at a number of festivals throughout the summer – is also amazed by the new "rock-star" status of DJs.

He told the Daily Star newspaper: "We’ve been put on a pedestal that possibly we don’t deserve and it might have gone too absurdly in the other direction now.

"When I started doing this thirty years ago, a DJs status was just above that of a glass collector."

Fatboy also admitted that seeing DJs such as Calvin Harris become such big stars makes him feel proud.

The ‘Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat’ hitmaker added: "People like Calvin Harris come up to me and say, ‘When I was a kid you were my inspiration’, and that means a lot. I’m really chuffed that I’m still around and invited to the party.

"I kind of feel like a proud uncle when I see people like Calvin."
