Elvis Presley’s Graceland set for $137m facelift

Elvis Presley’s former home Graceland is to undergo a $137 million facelift.
Officials at the Memphis-based abode-turned-museum have announced plans for a $92 million hotel to be constructed on the site, as well as a $45 million entertainment complex.
According to US newspaper The Commercial Appeal, the 450-room hotel will open on October 27 and be called The Guest House at Graceland, but when it is completed the Heartbreak Hotel will be demolished.
The forthcoming entertainment complex, which will be situated on the west side of Elvis Presley Boulevard, is to feature exhibitions which highlight the late singing legend’s career and replace the old complex, which features his cars, souvenir shops and eateries.
Some of the new features will include an Elvis the Entertainer museum and another exhibition of his prized motors.
The Graceland estate are to officially announce the project on Monday (15.08.16) and it is due to be completed next spring.
This comes after a guitar belonging to Elvis – who died in Memphis, Tennessee, in August 1977 aged 42 – was auctioned off at Graceland for £185,000 in January.
The 1969 Custom Gibson Ebony Dove was given to Mike Harris by the late star at a concert in 1975 and was expected to fetch up to £206,000.
Also included in the sale was an original tape of Elvis performing and some jewellery items.
Last year, Jack White splashed out $300,000 on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s first recordings at another auction at his Graceland estate on January 8, 2015, which would have been Elvis’ 80th birthday.
