Ellie Goulding’s Army about her best friend

Ellie Goulding’s new song is inspired by her best friend.

The 28-year-old singer has unveiled ‘Army’ today (30.10.15) and has revealed the track is about her pal of 10 years who has stood by her through life’s twists and turns.

Ellie admits her past songs have always been about relationships with boys and not the person who has been there for her throughout it all and she wanted to put it right.

In open letter to her fans, Ellie revealed: "I realised that I had focused a lot of writing on past relationships and it hit me I had never written about my best friend. The person I met in college over ten years ago. The person who was at my very first gig. The person who has seen me at my lowest and the first person I call in muffled sobs when something bad happens."

The blonde beauty hopes the song is a reflection of their "honest" and "electric" friendship.

She continued: "We’ve been deliriously happy together, deliriously tired and deliriously sad together. I wanted to show our friendship for what it really is- honest, real, electric.

"I think about the times we drink together until neither of us can stand. The laughing at our own ridiculousness and foolishness. Comparing our trials and errors; over-thinking our break ups and new loves, remembering everything we’ve been through to get to this point and being so proud of it."

The ‘On My Mind’ hitmaker added that when they are in each other’s company she feels like she’s "standing with an army", which is why she chose the track’s title.

She added: "Two girls from Hereford trying our best in the City. We open our hearts up and take risks, but together we are more powerful than ever. We are challenged every day but we see it through and sometimes it feels like we can conquer anything. When I’m with you, I’m standing with an army."

‘Army’ is being released early with all pre-orders of her forthcoming LP ‘Delirium’, which comes out on November 6.
