Eddie Redmayne found ‘The Danish Girl’ script to be "profoundly moving".
The Oscar-winning actor stars as transgender pioneer Lili lbe in the new movie, and said he decided to join the project after reading the emotion-filled storyline.
He said: "I read [the script] and it was profoundly moving, and a story about love and what it takes to be authentic, what it takes to be yourself.
"So I sort of jumped on board, and then I started meeting people from the trans community and people of different generations and hearing their stories."
Eddie said he received a significant amount of help from the transgender community in order to play the part.
He told Entertainment Weekly: "Across the board, every single woman I met said, ‘Ask me anything. There is no question, there is no territory that you can’t [ask]’ in order to educate me as a cisgender person."
This comes shortly after Eddie recently admitted he considered retiring after he won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in ‘The Theory of Everything’.
He said: "I had a moment of, ‘Oh f**k, I might retire tomorrow. I’m never going to do anything again.’
"The thought that it happened too early came in for a second. But then I thought, ‘No, I want this.’"
