EastEnders character set for ‘exciting’ Christmas return

‘EastEnders’ bosses are planning a former character’s "exciting" return as part of this year’s Christmas storylines.

Senior executive producer Kate Oates has teased a major plot for the upcoming festive episodes, and she admitted the character’s Walford comeback will be part of a "long-running" development on screen.

She said: "We have the second draft of the script stage for this Christmas.

"We have an exciting return planned and it’s going to be part of a huge long-running story that we’re going to be playing at Christmas."

Kate also admitted executive producer Jon Sen already knows how the scenes later this year will play into a Christmas storyline for 2021.

She added: "Jon is so organised, we kind of know what we are doing the Christmas after as well.

"We have really long arcs and that’s when you know you’re in a good place when making a soap.

"So not only are we very much on the way to completion for this Christmas, we know where we are going with the following one. ‘EastEnders’ Christmas is very much on the agenda."

The BBC One soap will return to air with new episodes on September 7th, following an enforced break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Executive producer Jon recently admitted the show is gearing up for its "second series" after some time off air.

Confirming the exciting news earlier this month, he said: "From the moment we turned the lights out in The Queen Vic our ambition was to come back with a bang and this autumn certainly does that.

"As soon as Albert Square reawakens the drama returns at a pace and, although working within social distancing guidelines has certainly given us some new challenges, I am incredibly proud of what everyone has achieved.

"The show is looking fantastic and we can’t wait for ‘series two’ to begin."
