EastEnders and Hollyoaks snubbed in BAFTA TV Awards nods

‘EastEnders’ has been snubbed for the Soap and Continuing Drama prize at this year’s BAFTA TV Awards.

The BBC One show won the accolade at last year’s ceremony, but the programme hasn’t even been nominated this time around, with medical dramas ‘Holby City’ and ‘Casualty’, and ITV soaps ‘Emmerdale’ and ‘Coronation Street’ all receiving nods instead.

‘EastEnders’ has a rich history in the category, winning it nine times, more than any other show since it was introduced in 1999.

Channel 4 soap ‘Hollyoaks’ has also been snubbed for the gong, after earning nods for the past three years. But the programme has never won the award.

‘Corrie’ also received a nod for the Must-See Moment award, the only category voted for by the public, for Sinead Osbourne’s tragic death from cervical cancer.

Katie McGlynn, who played the late character, admitted she is "beyond thrilled" to have been nominated for a BAFTA.

Speaking yesterday (03.06.20), she said: "To find out we’re nominated for a BAFTA – we are all just beyond thrilled.

"We’re over the moon. Especially because after the NTAs it was a great start to the year, and then all of this [coronavirus] happened, so I just assumed that would be it then and I wouldn’t hear more after the big story last year. Because I assumed everything would be cancelled and moving on to the next job.

"So to find out we’d been nominated for a BAFTA, we are so happy. Everyone worked so hard on this story.

"The cast, the crew, the writers, the researchers."

Last year, ‘Emmerdale’ was snubbed for a nod in the Soap & Continuing Drama category, and one of the show’s stars, James Hooton (Sam Dingle), questioned why the soap had missed out.

In response to a tweet from BAFTA which revealed ‘Casualty’, ‘Coronation Street’, ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Hollyoaks’ have received nods in the Soap and Continuing Drama category, he wrote: "Where’s emmerdale? (sic)"
