EastEnders airing special Ben Mitchell episode focused on hearing loss

‘EastEnders’ will air a special episode focused on Ben Mitchell and his hearing loss.
The upcoming episode – which will be set entirely from the perspective of Max Bowden’s alter ego – will see the character trying to come to terms with the deterioration of his hearing.
While watching, viewers will experience limited audio levels along with on-screen subtitles displaying words and fractured sentences to reflect the difficulties Ben is facing, while also highlighting the issues many deaf people experience across the UK.
Executive producer Jon Sen said: "The story of Ben’s struggle with his deafness has given us a gripping insight into his character.
"This special point of view episode is a ground-breaking episode unlike any other attempted in the history of ‘EastEnders’.
"Helmed by a compelling performance by Max Bowden, it allows the audience the opportunity to experience the world through Ben’s eyes and ears – a story communicated purely by his dialogue and the snatched words of those around him.
"I am so proud of what the team have achieved and cannot wait for the fans to see it."
The soap has collaborated with the National Deaf Children’s Society’s, audiologists and other experts to ensure an accurate portrayal.
It comes as Max’s alter ago continues to struggle to come to terms with his hearing difficulties, which were caused by the Thames boast incident.
Ben will try to prove to Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) that he can still help him out, but his operation getting delayed leaves his dad unsure whether his boy should be joining in their latest job.
Reflecting on the episode, Vicki Kirwin – an audiology specialist at the NDCS – added: "It was an absolute privilege to work with the team, who were so dedicated to making sure they got this right.
"This ground-breaking episode will give viewers a glimpse into the challenges many deaf people in the UK come up against each and every day, with brilliant technical skill to make viewers feel some sense of what Ben Mitchell is experiencing."
