Dwayne Johnson to star in Will Gluck’s action comedy

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is to star in Will Gluck’s new action comedy – which will be inspired by ‘Lethal Weapon’.

The 43-year-old actor has signed up to the as-yet untitled project created by Gluck and writer Dave Callaham which is going to be in the same style as classic mismatched ‘buddy cop’ movies such as Mel Gibson and Danny Glover’s classic 87 film, ‘Midnight Run’ – which starred Robert DeNiro as a bounty hunter – and ’48 Hrs’, which saw Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy team up as a detective inspector and a convict to catch a cop killer and is considered the first movie in the genre.

Confirming the project, Johnson posted on Twitter: "EXCLUSIVE. Excited to make this (produce & star) for you guys. Think "Lethal Weapon" meets "48 Hrs". #Throwback (sic)"

Johnson will also co-produce the project through his Seven Bucks company along with Gluck and his ‘San Andreas’ producer Beau Flynn and will be released through New Line Cinema.

It is the latest project the former WWE Superstar and New Line – which is part of Warner Bros. – have worked together on.

‘San Andreas’ was the studio’s most successful release of 2015, banking $474 million worldwide, and they have also teamed up to make monster apocalypse movie ‘Rampage’ – which will be directed by Brad Peyton and is based on the 1986 arcade game in which players took control of a giant gorilla, lizard and werewolf and attempt to destroy cities.

The studio are hoping the new ‘buddy cop’ film will be the start of a successful franchise for Johnson.

The big screen tough guy can next be seen in ‘Central Intelligence’ with Kevin Hart and is currently shooting the ‘Baywatch’ film – based on the TV series starring Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff.
