Download Festival announces The Lemmy Stage

Download Festival have named their main stage ‘The Lemmy Stage’ in memory of the late Lemmy Kilmister.

Motörhead were due to perform at the festival – held at Donington Park, Leicestershire, England, – in June, but after the death of the frontman in December the band decided they could not go on without the iconic rock star, who died following a battle with an "aggressive cancer".

However, in honour of the metal legend, for 2016 only, the main stage take the rock legend’s name.

And organisers of the festival are currently working out plans for a tribute set, which will go ahead at the time Motörhead would have performed.

A statement on the festival’s website www.downloadfestival.co.uk, reads: "Whilst we’re saddened to say Motörhead will no longer be performing at this year’s Download Festival, we will honour a true rock ‘n’ roll icon who inspired so many others on the bill, Lemmy Kilmister. For one year only, Download Festival’s Main Stage will be named ‘The Lemmy Stage’ in tribute to a much loved and missed legend. We are working with Motörhead’s management on a tribute to the great man during the slot he would have performed on, more information to follow."

Meanwhile, a life-size statue of the ‘Ace of Spades’ hitmaker is to be placed in front of his favourite bar, The Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood.

The bronze artwork was designed by local artist Travis Moore and will be unveiled at the bar, which was visited by Lemmy regularly.

The artwork has been funded by fans through a crowdfunding campaign, which has currently raised $15,875.

Taking to Facebook, artist Travis said: "I’m so happy to be creating the Lemmy statue. This will be an amazing tribute to him and all the Motörhead family out there around the world, who are helping raise the cash."
