Doctor Who production could be impacted by social distancing measures

‘Doctor Who’ production could be delayed if social distancing measures remain in place.

The director of BBC Wales has commented on the upcoming 13th series of the sci-fi favourite – which stars Jodie Whittaker as the titular Time Lord – and it’s not likely a programme of this scale could work under such restrictions.

During an online Q&A with RTS Cymru Wales, Rhodri Talfan Davies said: "It’ll be down to social distancing.

"A production like that, which at any point employs hundreds of people, freelance and staff, I don’t believe can be made to the current standard in a socially distanced environment.

"So it depends when you think social distancing is going to end."

Davies also suggested the production issues could vary between England and Wales, with differing guidelines enacted by the Welsh Assembly Government.

‘Doctor Who’ has been made in Wales since 2005, while the last few series has seen filming and production centred at Cardiff Bay’s Roath Lock Production Hub.

David added: "It may well be that the rules on social distancing in Wales are different to those in England.

"And obviously each production centre from those two countries is going to need to respond to the specific rules and regulations that each of the governments are introducing."

Despite the speculation regarding the upcoming season, it was recently confirmed the show’s festive special has already been completed.

Mandip Gill – who plays companion Yasmin Khan – revealed: "I can confirm that [it’s already been shot]… There is a festive episode.

"We happened to be quite lucky and fit it in, so that will be exciting."

Showrunner Chris Chibnall recently updated fans and revealed the crew were working from home to keep things on track.

He explained: "Post-production continues on ‘Revolution of the Daleks’.

"Our brilliant teams are working remotely on the visual effects shots and sending them in.

"Nothing brightens a day like a new FX shot in your inbox, no matter how early the stage it’s at."
