Dermot Mulroney played cello for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Dermot Mulroney played cello for the ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ soundtrack.
The 53-year-old actor maybe best known for his roles in movies such as ‘Jobs’ and ‘Insidious: Chapter 3’, as well as television shows like ‘Shameless’, but the star has recently turned his attention to music and was thrilled when he got to contribute to Michael Giacchino’s score for the ‘Star Wars’ spin off movie, sitting in as part of the orchestra.
Speaking about playing as part of an orchestra, Mulroney said: "Obviously, I knew about orchestras, I knew how to play in one, I knew about scoring orchestras. But then when I start doing it, it really became a different perspective for me and such a source of pride – but pride related to the fact that I’m included in an exclusive group of musicians … really just towering talent. I’m more of a journeyman player."
And this isn’t the first time Dermot has put his skills to the test on a movie soundtrack, as he previously picked up the cello for ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, and ‘Jurassic World’.
Oscar-winning musician Giacchino – who has composed the music for every film that Dermot has played on – said: "I was like, ‘Can you really read music? Because there’s no rehearsals. You just have to play it.’
"He goes, ‘No, I can do that, I can do that!’ I was like, ‘Alright, well then why don’t you sit in with our cello section on ‘Mission Impossible’?"
Dermot says the reason he never pursued a career in music was because he thought it was a "dead-end road".
Asked by the Los Angeles Times newspaper why he chose acting over music as a career, he said: "The truth is, I thought both of those ideas were dead-end roads. I thought it was a stupid career path, because there’s no chance in hell that I would either be a professional musician or an actor."
