David Gilmour on a Pink Floyd avatar show at Las Vegas Sphere: ‘I’ve always wanted to sit and watch myself do it’

David Gilmour has suggested he’d be keen for a Pink Floyd avatar show at the Las Vegas Sphere.

The prog rock icon – who is best known as a member of the Comfortably Numb band – made the comments during a Q+A at the UK premiere of his concert film Live At Circus Maximus, Rome, held at London’s BFI IMAX.

When asked about the possibility of a Sphere residency, Gilmour said: “The Sphere? Well, you know, I’m hoping, one of these days, to go there and sit and watch myself doing it, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. My avatar, you know? So I don’t actually have to get up and do it.”

It’s not the first time Gilmour has floated the idea.

Speaking to Uncut in 2024, he said he’d be open to a virtual show like ABBA Voyage — but only under very specific conditions.

He told the magazine: “If someone came up with all the money and all the brilliant ideas – and then once we’ve agreed to a series of very, very difficult and onerous conditions – I’d say, ‘Yeah, OK.’”

Gilmour, who played 21 shows in support of his solo album Luck and Strange last year, previously said he wouldn’t rule out a residency at the state-of-the-art Sphere.

He told Rolling Stone: “Well, to be honest, I really know almost nothing about what it does. But they have been on and suggested that I might do something there. But in the future, who knows. I haven’t got that far. It will be in there amongst the plans that we are to think about.”

He would follow in the footsteps of the likes of U2, the Eagles, and the Backstreet Boys if Gilmour were to book a Sphere residency.

The first-of-its-kind venue is renowned for its immersive video and audio capabilities, including a giant wraparound LED screen.
