David Bowie fans to raise money for memorial statue

David Bowie fans are trying to raise money to build a memorial statue in his home town of Brixton.
The ‘Space Oddity’ hitmaker passed away in January last year at the age of 69 but his supporters are determined to do all they can to ensure his memory lives on as they’re desperately trying to gather £990,000 by March 21 to erect a three-storey lightning bolt in the south London district.
The statue will replicate the late singer’s Aladdin Sane character – featured on the cover of his 1973 hit album of the same name – and will stand five streets away from his birthplace opposite the Brixton underground stop near several famous London clubs.
The fans have joined forces to create the fundraising group This Ain’t Rock’n’Roll and are reportedly working closely with Lambeth borough council and Bowie’s management team in London and New York to ensure the project goes ahead before the end of the year.
In order to persuade people to part with their cash, donors will receive a selection of gifts – T-shirts, pendants and limited-edition Bowie prints and a 3D replica of the statue – upon registration.
This isn’t the first time fans have gathered together to raise money for a memorial as last year a crowd-funding campaign raised £100,000 to build a statue in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
The legendary rocker’s supporters were keen to have the statue erected in the small English town as it was where he first unveiled his Ziggy Stardust character in the early ’70s.
And it’s not just Bowie’s English fans who desperately want his memory to live on as Berlin also unveiled its own plaque last year outside the building where he lived from 1976 to 1978.
Bowie passed away in Manhattan, New York following a secret battle with cancer.
