Dave Mustaine wants Megadeath’s final concert to be on the moon

Dave Mustaine wants Megadeth to perform in space.

The thrash metal legends are gearing up for their farewell tour and final album in 2026, but the 64-year-old frontman has revealed he would like the band to play one final gig on the moon.

He told Metal Hammer: “I hope we’ll be playing up in space.

“I think that will be a really fitting climax. And I’m not talking about on the side of a vomit comet. A gig on the Moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool. I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought ‘Well, if them, why not me?’, you know?’

He continued: “I’m just watching how that all progresses. I know Elon Musk and Richard Branson were working on interstellar travel. I think people are going to be travelling to space a lot sooner than you think.

“People already travel over 40,000 feet altitude, and when you get to that kind of atmosphere you’re basically already in space.”

Discussing whether he would move to another planet if it were possible, he pondered: “I do think it’s going to happen. The question is, are people going to be able to inhabit the moon? Personally, I’d never want to live on a planet away from the world we live in. People were talking about a trip to Mars, but all I can imagine is somebody suddenly going ‘Oh! I forgot my toothbrush!’ That would be the longest flight ever!’”

Mustaine recently suggested their final tour could last “for another three to five years”.

He told Kerrang!: “If we’re going to be doing it for that long then, s***, I’ll be looking at the birthday I don’t even want to think about!”

As of yet, the tour dates are yet to be unveiled.

The band’s self-titled album has so far been previewed by the singles Tipping Point and I Don’t Care.

The 11-track LP also includes a cover of Metallica’s Ride The Lightning, one of two of the rival band’s tracks he penned for their second album of the same name, along with The Call of Ktulu, during his brief tenure with the Enter Sandman rockers.

The follow-up to 2022’s The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead! is set for release on January 23.
