Danny Boyle in talks to direct Miss Saigon film

Danny Boyle is in discussions to helm a film adaptation of the musical ‘Miss Saigon’.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ director will take the director’s chair for the highly anticipated film version of the epic love story, which is set in Vietnam during the final days of the American occupation of the capital.

If Danny, 59, takes the job he will team with Working Title Films, who have enlisted the musical’s producer Cameron Mackintosh as well as film producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner – whose other joint credits include ‘Hail! Caesar’, ‘The Theory of Everything’ and ‘Les Miserables’.

Set in 1975, ‘Miss Saigon’ centres on the relationship between an American GI named John and a young Vietnamese woman, Kim, who is orphaned by the war and forced to work as a bar girl in a sleazy Saigon night club.

John buys his friend Chris the services of Kim for the night but his life changes forever when he falls in love with her.

When the end of the war is suddenly declared, a mass evacuation of the city ensues and the lovers are tragically torn apart.

The musical hit the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane in London in 1989 but it has been brought to 28 countries in over 300 cities, and the story has been told in 15 different languages.

Elsewhere, it is hoped that Danny’s next project will be the long-awaited ‘Trainspotting’ sequel which he has tried to get into production for many years.

The original movie – which starred Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle – was released two decades ago.
