Craig Revel Horwood received "horrid" abuse on Twitter after revealing he wanted to adopt a child.
The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge claims to have been inundated with homophobic messages in the last month after revealing he would be open to having a civil partnership and adopting with his partner, Damon Scott, with whom he shares his Hampshire home.
He admitted: "We had trolling abuse when we said that we may want to adopt. Some people have been really horrid and abusive and disgusting."
The 50-year-old television star confessed he finds the situation perplexing as he believes they would be able to parent a child just as well as a heterosexual couple.
He explained: "There are kids out there who need education and they need foster homes to go to and they need people who are prepared to love them.
"A gay couple can offer that as much as a straight couple as they can’t have children naturally.
"I don’t know what the big fuss is about."
The dancer and choreographer added he does not understand people who are abusive to gay celebrities, noting ‘Candle in the Wind’ singer Elton John – who has four-year-old Zachary and 23-month-old Elijah with husband David Furnish – who still receives insults online despite supporting charities around the world.
He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "If you look at Elton John, he has enough money to build schools around the country.
"I know he is putting his money to good use in helping people so I don’t know where these trolling people get off really.
"It is not acceptable when people say, ‘I don’t agree with your sexuality.’
"It is as good as being racist. And that is unacceptable. People have to learn to change and accept human nature."
