Corrie’s Simon Gregson escaped Manchester blaze

‘Coronation Street’ star Simon Gregson and his wife had a "lucky escape" after a fire broke out at Manchester’s The Ivy restaurant on the weekend.
The 44-year-old actor – who plays Steve McDonald on the ITV soap – has thanked restaurant staff via Twitter for helping him and his wife Emma following an inferno at the eatery.
He wrote on Twitter: "Hats off to the staff at The Ivy yesterday for getting everyone out safe."
Emma shared a clip on her Twitter, writing: "The Ivy Manchester is now on fire! What a lucky escape (sic)"
Fortunately, the fire was confined to The Ivy’s terrace area, allowing the restaurant to re-open its doors the very next night after being given the go-ahead by fire chiefs.
A statement read: "The fire was contained in one section of The Roof Garden thanks to the excellent work of the Greater Manchester Fire Services who have informed us that the building is now totally safe to occupy."
Simon is far more used to being involved in comical situations on the ‘Corrie’ set.
His co-star Kym Marsh – who plays Bistro boss Michelle Connor – recently said: "Simon Gregson won Funniest Male [at the Inside Soap Awards] and no wonder – he’s got funny bones, that one.
"I sometimes find it hard working with him because she’s so hysterical.
"Simon plays Steve McDonald, who is the great comedic character, and my character Michelle Connor is the straight man. It’s very difficult to keep a straight face."
