Coronation Street bosses secure stars

‘Coronation Street’ bosses are trying to secure Brooke Vincent and Kym Marsh on the show for another 12 months.

The soap’s producers are reportedly keen to keep the pair on following the announcement that series favourites Alison King and Craig Charles are planning to quit the show earlier this week.

Fans were left shocked when Craig, 50, who plays Lloyd Mullaney on the soap revealed he was exiting to take up a part on the sci-fi sitcom ‘Red Dwarf’ despite bosses pleading with him to stay, while Alison, 42, who plays Carla Connor will star in her final scenes in 2016.

Rumours that Craig’s pay packet – which is thought to be an estimated £200,000 each year – being responsible for him quitting the show quickly circulated, sparking worries that more stars are set to exit the ITV soap.

However, sources have confirmed to the Daily Mirror newspaper that Brooke, 22, who has played Sophie Webster since 2004, and Kym, 38, have no plans to leave.

An insider said: "Brooke loves it on the soap and is very happy.

"Before signing on for another year she met with bosses and her character has some great storylines coming up."

Kym – who plays Michelle Connor – is already thought to have a six figure contract which takes her through to 2016.

Show bosses were said to have become increasingly worried about losing their "big names" after Craig and Allison, as well as Jimi Mistry and Hayley Tamaddon, recently announced they were leaving.

A source previously said: "Corrie is still doing well as far as viewing figures are concerned but certain cast members are unhappy with the direction it is going in. A lot of people feel that it has changed considerably in recent years.

"These two departures might not be the last – and if big names keep leaving that could prove to be a major problem for Corrie.

"Soaps rely on their big names and Corrie can’t afford to keep losing theirs."
