Chris Chibnall: I’m ‘proud’ of Broadchurch

Chris Chibnall is "proud" of the final episode of ‘Broadchurch’.
The 46-year-old television writer is the creator of the popular ITV crime drama which will air its final ever episode on Monday (17.04.17), and has said despite it being "very emotional" for him to write, he admits he’s pleased with the final result.
Speaking about the show – which stars David Tennant and Olivia Coleman – Chris said: "Sitting down to write the final episode was very emotional and I admit I actually had a bit of a weep doing it. Obviously it is a very emotional story we are telling and there are lots of complex shades of emotion.
"There is the resolution to the story of the attack on Trish, which goes to a lot of dark places, but there is also the small matter of saying goodbye to the show and all these characters."
The writer – who is set to become the showrunner of BBC sci-fi hit ‘Doctor Who’ when Steven Moffat steps down at the end of this year – also teased that the final episode offers "a sense of completion" to the audience.
He added: "There is pressure with every script, but I am really proud of the final episode. Hopefully there are some surprises, but I also hope it is satisfying. I think there is a sense of completion and lots of nods to where we started in series one."
Meanwhile, Chris admits he had second thoughts about bringing the show to an end, and admitted he "felt like an idiot" for his decision.
He told The Sun newspaper: "I felt like a bit of an idiot. I was like: ‘Why am I saying goodbye to David and Olivia and all these brilliant people?’ But I didn’t have another story to tell in this world and I think it’s nice to go out on such strong form.
"There seems to be a real groundswell of affection for the show this year, which I hadn’t really expected."
The finale of ‘Broadchurch’ airs on Monday (17.04.17) at 9pm on ITV.
