Bryan Ferry’s son Merlin ‘stable’ after crash

Bryan Ferry’s son Merlin is in a "stable" condition in hospital following a horrific head-on car crash but faces a "long period of recovery".

The 69-year-old singer/songwriter took to his Facebook account to thank fans for their support and reveal his 24-year-old son has undergone several operations after the three-vehicle collision on a country lane in Shropshire, central England, just before Christmas left him with a head injury and multiple fractures to his legs, pelvis and left arm.

He wrote: "On behalf of BF and the family, many thanks for all the kind messages of support for Merlin following his road accident before Christmas.

"Merlin has undergone a series of operations and is now stable in hospital, with a long period of recovery ahead of him. (sic)"

Bryan also paid tribute to the "amazing" ambulance service which had to cut Merlin out of the wreckage and the "superb" staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, where his youngest son underwent a life-saving operation while in the critical care unit shortly after the crash.

He added in the message: "A huge thank you to the amazing emergency services provided by the Wellington Fire Service and West Midland Ambulance Service, together with the superb care and attention from all the medical staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham."

Shortly after the incident, Bryan’s eldest son, Otis, 32, took to social networking sites to reveal what happened during the collision and described his brother’s car as looking like a "mangled box of tin".

He wrote on Instagram: "He had a head-on collision, has lots of broken bones and is having an operation on his heart as we speak.

"He was conscious before he went into theatre and his biggest concern was that he had missed Christmas! He is in the best possible hospital for this type of procedure. (sic)"

Otis later took to his Twitter account to thank Wellington Fire Service for getting his brother out of the wreckage.

He wrote: "thank you for extracting my Brother alive from what looks like a mangled box of tin. We are all continuing to pray (sic)"

Several stars, including US musician Nile Rodgers, contacted Bryan – who also has two other children, Isaac and Tara, and divorced their mother Lucy in 2003 after 21 years of marriage – after news of the accident broke to send their best wishes to his family.
