Broadchurch criticised for ‘turning into a soap’

‘Broadchurch’ has been criticised for "turning into a soap".

The ITV drama has seen a drop in ratings since it returned for its second series earlier this month and viewers have now commented that the storylines are closer to that of soaps such as ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Coronation Street’ than a crime thriller.

Referring to Eva Myles’ character Claire – whom David Tennant’s Detective Inspector Hardy is believed to be having an affair with – one viewer wrote on Twitter: "Claire’s the underlying problem, every1 slept with every1, and it’s turning into a soap (sic)."

The first episode of the new series drew in an impressive 7.6 million viewers but last night’s (26.01.15) show saw just 5.6 million tune in and some fans can’t quite put their finger on what’s gone wrong.

A Twitter user shared with their followers: "I’m not sure if it’s the script, the plot, the acting or the editing but I’m finding Broadchurch sort of, well, rubbish."

Tennant disagrees with claims the show has seen a dip in popularity, however.

Speaking at the National Television Awards last week, he said: "What backlash? I don’t think anything’s gone wrong. It’s fantastic!"
