Britain’s Prince of Wales attends memorial of Sir Winston Churchill’s daughter

The Prince of Wales attended a memorial in remembrance of Sir Winston Churchill’s last surviving child.

The 66-year-old heir apparent and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall arrived at the service at Westminster Abbey yesterday (20.11.14) in honour of Lady Mary Soames who died in May aged 91.

The service was conducted by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, who said: "In this holy place, house of God and house of Kings, where her beloved father Winston Churchill is honoured with a permanent memorial, we assemble to give thanks to almighty God for the life and work of Mary Soames.

‘We remember her war service and the times when she accompanied her father during the Second World War."

The service was attended by her family and friends as well as former Prime Minister Sir John Major who spoke of his "very fond remembrances" of Lady Soames and read an extract from the Book of John, reports the Yorkshire Post newspaper.

Among the 1000 strong crowd was Max Hastings, a journalist and historian, who described her as "a worthy daughter of the greatest Englishman".

Queen guitarist Brain May also arrived to pay tribute to Sir Winston’s daughter.
