Bertie Carvel worried about paint throwing after Doctor Foster finale

‘Doctor Foster’ actor Bertie Carvel is worried about people throwing paint at him after last night’s (07.10.15) finale.

The 38-year-old star has been playing cheating husband Simon Foster in the hit BBC drama for the past five weeks and he’s confessed he’s worried about the reaction he could receive from the public after he appeared to get away almost scot-free in the final episode.

He told ITV’s ‘This Morning’: "I’ve got to walk from here to the Old Vic [theatre] after this and I’ll probably have people throwing paint at me!"

However, the ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell’ actor has revealed he tried not to think of his character – who had been having an affair behind his wife’s back for two years – as a bad guy.

He explained: "I think when you’re playing characters you have to be careful not to judge them too much.

"What I think about villains per se, is that people tend not to think of themselves as villains in their own story. You might hate yourself, you might know what your doing’s wrong but people seldom cast themselves as the villain. They sort of think of themselves as the flawed hero in their own story and that’s the way you’ve got to approach playing a character.

"Also, I want my villains to be recognisably human, to have a soft side. I want there to be light and shade just as I want my heroes to have flaws, otherwise they don’t feel satisfying, they don’t feel lifelike."
