Ben Haenow claims Christmas number one spot

Ben Haenow has won the race for the Christmas number one.

The 2014 winner of ‘The X Factor’ sold 214,000 copies of his single, ‘Something I Need’, according to the Official Charts Company.

The 29-year-old former van driver was thrilled by his achievement, saying: "To have even been in the running for Christmas Number 1 against some of the names that were in the race, and then to have actually won is incredible.

"It’s an incredible end to my year. I’m absolutely shocked, I can’t believe it.

"I’m gonna go and have a few good drinks with my mates – definitely more than a few good drinks – to celebrate."

Ben’s single, which was originally recorded by US pop band OneRepublic, overcame competition from Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, whose song ‘Uptown Funk’ dropped one place to number two.

Charity single ‘Band Aid 30’ ended up in 17th place, well below expectations.

Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran’s ‘X’ was named the top-selling album in the run-up to Christmas, shifting more than 214,000 copies last week, which is the most it has ever sold in a seven-day period.

Ed’s record was already the UK’s biggest-selling album of 2014, excluding compilations.
