BBC Three to become online-only channel?

BBC Three could become an online-only channel.

The BBC is considering axing the youth-oriented digital channel – which airs programmes such as ‘Snog Marry Avoid?’ and ‘Bad Education’ – in a cost-cutting measure which would see it move to BBC’s iPlayer service, reports Broadcast.

However, a spokesperson for the corporation insists "no decisions have been made", but "nothing is off the table".

Numerous stars including Matt Lucas, whose hit show ‘Little Britain’ began life on BBC Three before moving to BBC One, have lent their support to saving the digital channel.

Matt wrote on Twitter: "Hearing horrible rumours about the possible closure of BBC3. This would be really bad for new comedy. Like, REALLY bad. #SaveBBC3 (sic)"

Meanwhile, ‘Bad Education’ creator-and-star Jack Whitehall tweeted: "I really hope reports that the BBC may kill BBC3 are just rumours. There support of new comedy in particular is vital! #saveBBC3 (sic)"

Speculation about BBC Three’s future began mounting after BBC director general Tony Hall announced the corporation would make £100 million in budget cuts.

He said last week: "We are in the final stages of a budget process to find an extra £100m of savings. I will announce the outcome of those decisions in the next month."

BBC Three first launched in 2003 and has spawned numerous hit shows such as ‘Gavin and Stacey’, ‘Torchwood’ and ‘Being Human’.
