Barry Evans’ EastEnders death honoured with plaque

Shaun Williamson’s ‘EastEnders’ death has been honoured with a special plaque.

The 54-year-old actor’s character Barry Evans was pushed off a cliff by wife Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) in 2004 after she admitted to faking their entire relationship, and the spot where his character died now has a special tribute.

One soap fan found the plaque, which reads: "Barry from EastEnders DIED HERE 2nd January 2004. (sic)"

The Facebook user shared the image in the ‘Scotland from the Roadside’ group, and explained: "Found this today at Rest and be Thankful area (sic)"

Shaun played Barry on the BBC between 1994 and 2004, and he previously opened up about his desire to take on another soap role.

When asked if he would consider joining either of the ITV soaps, he replied: "I would. They’re excellent, they do comedy very well.

"I wouldn’t mind another 10 years in a soap. I think I’d be a bit more grateful this time around."

But Shaun believes playing such a comical character in ‘EastEnders’ and then going on to portray a satirical version of himself in ‘Extras’ may have ruined his chances of forging a "credible career in drama".

He said: "It’s cost me a credible career in drama. I realise that, I’m not stupid."

And the soap star has admitted he and other newcomers had to "just get on with it and prove that you belonged there" while appearing opposite legendary actors, such as Wendy Richard, Dame Barbara Windsor and Mike Reid.

He said: "It was real sink or swim. They were lovely people. But when you went on set for the first time you’d have people like Barbara Windsor, Mike Reid, Wendy Richard – these were huge stars before they went to ‘EastEnders’.

"Then there were people who the show made stars of, like Pam St Clement, and Tony Caunter, and June Brown. So, this was no place for a shy, retiring, wall flower. You had to just get on with it and prove that you belonged there."
