Bandcamp bans AI‑generated music in new policy aimed at protecting human artists

Bandcamp has announced a strict new policy that bans music created wholly or largely with generative AI.

The move is part of the company’s wider effort to reinforce its long‑standing mission of supporting human musicians and preserving the creative connection between artists and fans.

The indie‑focused music marketplace — known for championing direct artist support — said the update is designed to ensure listeners can trust that the music they discover on the site is made by real people, not algorithms. Bandcamp emphasised that its platform was built on the belief that music is a deeply human art form rooted in culture, community and shared experience, not just a digital product.

Under the new guidelines, any track generated entirely or substantially by AI is prohibited, and the company has taken an especially firm stance against AI tools used to mimic the voices, styles or identities of real artists. Bandcamp noted that such impersonation already violates its existing rules around intellectual property and artist integrity.

The platform is also encouraging users to report any uploads that appear to rely heavily on AI. Bandcamp says it reserves the right to remove content if there is reasonable suspicion that it was created using generative tools rather than human musicianship.

In a statement outlining the policy, the company said: “Bandcamp’s mission is to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans. We believe that the human connection found through music is a vital part of our society and culture, and that music is much more than a product to be consumed. It’s the result of a human cultural dialog stretching back before the written word.”
