Idina Menzel to sing national anthem at Super Bowl

Idina Menzel will sing the US national anthem at this year’s Super Bowl.

The 43-year-old star has been chosen to belt out the iconic ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ song at Super Bowl XLIX at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona on February 1, and the ‘Frozen’ star cannot wait to perform on the same stage as the late Whitney Houston, who sang the anthem at the American football event 24 years ago.

She wrote on Twitter: "It was 1991 and I remember it well: Whitney sings the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Almost as glorious as her voice was her huge radiant smile. I am so humbled and honored to be asked this year. (sic)"

John Legend also has been announced to perform ‘America the Beautiful’ at the annual NFL event.

What’s more, the pair will be joined by fellow singers Lenny Kravitz and Katy Perry, who is reportedly planning to poke fun at rival popstar Taylor Swift during her set at this year’s spectacle.

Actress Treshelle Edmond will also take to the stage to perform both ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ and ‘America the Beautiful’ in sign language in front of the 63,400-strong crowd.

Idina will follow in the footsteps of Backstreet Boys, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys who have all performed a rendition of the US national anthem at previous Super Bowls.
