Grand Budapest Hotel leads BAFTA nominations with 11

‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ leads the BAFTA Film Awards nominations with 11 nods.

The Wes Anderson comedy movie is up for the main award, Best Film, but will face stiff competition from ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Theory of Everything’, which both received 10 nominations, ‘The Imitation Game’, which has nine, and ‘Boyhood’, which is up for five gongs overall.

Ralph Fiennes is up for the Leading Actor prize for his portrayal of the hotel concierge, but he will go up against Eddie Redmayne (‘The Theory of Everything’), Benedict Cumberbatch (‘The Imitation Game’), Michael Keaton (‘Birdman’) and Jake Gyllenhaal (‘Nightcrawler’) for the accolade.

Redmayne’s leading lady Felicity Jones has been nominated for the Leading Actress award alongside Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon (‘Wild’), Julianne Moore (‘Still Alice’) and Amy Adams (‘Big Eyes’).

The Imitation Game’s Keira Knightley is also recognised for her role in the movie in the Supporting Actress category with Emma Stone (‘Birdman’), Imelda Staunton (‘Pride’), Patricia Arquette (‘Boyhood’) and Rene Russo (‘Nightcrawler’).

‘Foxcatcher’ stars Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell both received nods in the Supporting Actor category but they will have to go up against tough opposition in the form of Edward Norton (‘Birdman’), Ethan Hawke (‘Boyhood’) and J.K. Simmons (‘Whiplash’) if either of them are to take home the gong.

As well as his film receiving 11 nominations, Anderson could also be set for some personal success after he was given nods for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, but will face stiff competition from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Richard Linklater, James Marsh and Damien Chazelle.

The EE British Academy Film Awards take place on February 8 at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.

The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD, preceded by a red carpet show on BBC Three.
