Ethan Hawke came close to playing Doctor Strange for Marvel.
The 44-year-old actor was heavily linked to the role because of his relationship with director Scott Derrickson, who he worked with on 2012 horror ‘Sinister’, but ultimately lost out to Benedict Cumberbatch.
Speaking to the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Ethan said he’d come "as close as anybody could" to playing Doctor Strange, and he also said he remains "totally open" to taking on a role in another Marvel film.
Ethan shared: "We’re living in the age of Marvel. Marvel has a tremendous amount of power over what everybody’s going to see. They’re making movies at a high rate and they’re making them successfully."
However, Ethan also admitted such films require lots of tiring promotional work.
He said: "It’s a tremendous amount of time in your life where you’re working, and not acting."
Earlier this month, Benedict Cumberbatch said he doesn’t think taking on the lead role in ‘Doctor Strange’ is a risk.
The 38-year-old star is confident the film will be a success because of Marvel’s ability to bring lesser-known characters to life.
He shared: "I don’t think it’s a risk because of Marvel.
"Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods."
