Stephen Fry was banned from using Twitter in Mexico because of fears he’d be kidnapped.
The 57-year-old actor has revealed his insurance company advised him not to use the social networking site while visiting the region for a new TV project as they were worried criminals could use it to track him down and hold him for ransom.
He shared: "I was filming in Mexico, which is a wonderful country, but the insurance company decided I should not tweet for fear of kidnapping and things like that.
"They did not want me to reveal where I was."
The ‘Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ star confessed it was quite daunting being told what he should and shouldn’t do while staying in the country, which has one of the highest kidnapping rates in the world, but admitted he didn’t witness any crime during his visit.
Speaking on an episode of ‘Alan Carr: Chatty Man’ – which airs tonight (12.12.14) on Channel 4 – he added: "They told me not to use social media or drive at night. There has been appalling violence but I did not sense any of that."
