Cast of Dad’s Army remake announced

The cast of the upcoming ‘Dad’s Army’ remake has been revealed.

Blake Harrison – who plays goofy Neil Sutherland in ‘The Inbetweeners’ – is to take on the role of Private Pike, who was originally played by Ian Lavender, in the upcoming film adaptation of the classic sitcom set during World War II.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ actor Toby Jones, 48, will play Captain Mainwaring – who was leader of the somewhat inefficient members of the Home Guard in the fictitious town of Walmington-on-Sea – replacing Arthur Lowe.

Bill Nighy will take over from John Le Mesurier as Mainwaring’s right-hand man Sergeant Wilson while ‘Mrs. Biggs’ actor Daniel Mays is to portray sleazy spiv Walker – who was originally played by James Beck who tragically died aged 44 in 1973, four years before the show came to an end in 1977.

Completing the line-up are Michael Gambon as Godfrey, originally played by Arnold Ridley, Bill Paterson as "we’re doomed!" crooner Private Fraser and Tom Courtenay as the beloved Private Jones, known for his catchphrase, "Don’t panic!", when played by the late Clive Dunn.

Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones will join the men as a journalist sent to Walmington-on-Sea to interview them as the war comes to an end, her visit coinciding, however, with news from MI5 that a spy is on the loose.

Filming is set to commence in Yorkshire later this month, Empire Online reports.
