Peter Capaldi’s fans ask him for abuse

Peter Capaldi’s fans ask him to "abuse" them.

The ‘Doctor Who’ star – who is also known for his portrayal of spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in ‘The Thick Of It’ – has confessed that playing the polar opposite characters has left him with an interesting set of fans.

While avid followers of the sci-fi series simply smile and greet him in the street, fans of the political comedy often approach him asking for verbal attacks in the style of his foul-mouthed on-screen persona.

The 56-year-old attributes the difference in attitude to the history of ‘Doctor Who’, believing fans are more excited to see the Doctor – previously played by Matt Smith and Christopher Eccleston – than he himself.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It is amazing the crossover, there’s quite a large overlap. Obviously, ‘The Thick Of It’ fans ask me to tell them to … abuse them in the street.

"With Doctor Who, you have 50 years of the programme. When people see me they project that onto me. So I get all the smiles for Matt Smith and Christopher Eccleston so that is lovely, everyone is pleased to see you.

"But it is because they don’t really know me. They’re pleased to see the Doctor which is nice."
