Leonardo DiCaprio honoured for conservation work

Leonardo DiCaprio has been honoured for his environmental work.

The ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ actor accepted the Clinton Global Citizen Award from World Wildlife Fund CEO Carter Roberts at the Sheraton Times Square in New York yesterday (21.09.14) and urged people to "put environmental issues at the forefront of the human agenda."

He said: "Climate change is compromising the very livability of our planet.

"Less than three percent of all philanthropic giving goes toward protecting and preserving our environment," he explained, before urging people "to put environmental issues at the forefront of the human agenda."

Earlier in the day, Leonardo, 39, joined stars including Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo, Sting and Evangeline Lilly in taking part in the People’s Climate Change march.

The ‘Titanic’ star’s award comes a few months after he pledged $7 million for ocean conservation at the State Department’s Our Ocean Conference in Washington, where he called for moves to curb "plundering the ocean and its vital resources" as he vowed to make a hefty donation from his self-titled foundation for "meaningful conservation projects" over the next two years.

He said: "[I’m] here as a concerned citizen of this planet who believes this is the most important issue of our time.

"What we need is sustained activism and courageous political leadership. We cannot afford to be bystanders in this pre-apocalyptic scenario."
