Barack Obama sent a message of condolence to Joan Rivers’ daughter.
The US president wrote a hand-written message to Melissa Rivers following the passing of the 81-year-old star – who died earlier this month after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing throat surgery – in which he praised her thought-provoking humour.
Speaking on a ‘Fashion Police: Celebrating Joan’ special which airs in the US today (19.09.14), Melissa said: "She affected so many people, and people you would never expect to have humour.
"I received a letter from the White House, President Obama, someone who was often a target of her jokes, as was Mrs. Obama, but I received a hand-written note saying ‘Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think.’ "
Melissa recently spoke out to thank fans for their messages of support following her mother’s death.
She wrote in a WhoSay post: "As my son Cooper and I mourn the loss of my mother, we want to thank everyone for the beautiful cards and flowers conveying heartfelt messages and condolences, which continue to arrive from around the world and through social media. My mother would have been overwhelmed by the scope and depth of the love that people have expressed for her. It is certainly helping to lift our spirits during this time.
"We are forever grateful for your kindness and support in continuing to honor my mother’s legacy, and for remembering the joy and laughter that she brought to so many."
