Angus Lennie has died aged 84

‘The Great Escape’ actor Angus Lennie has died.

The 84-year-old star passed away at a nursing home in Acton, west London last night (14.09.14), the Daily Record newspaper reports.

The Glasgow-born actor was best known for playing Flying Officer Ives ‘The Mole’ alongside Steve McQueen as Hilts ‘The Cooler King’ and James Garner as Hendley ‘The Scrounger’ in the classic wartime drama.

However, he also had parts in British TV favourites including ‘Keeping Up Appearances’, ‘Monarch of the Glen’ and long-running ITV soap ‘Crossroads’ as well as film roles in ‘633 Squadron’, ‘Tunes of Glory’ and 1969 musical ‘Oh! What a Lovely War’.

News of Lennie’s death comes less than a month after his ‘The Great Escape’ co-star Sir Richard Attenborough – who played Bartlett ‘Big X’ in the movie – passed away aged 90.

Attenborough – whose health had been deteriorating after he fell down the stairs at his home in 2008 following a stroke – directed Lennie and his castmates Dirk Bogarde, Vanessa Redgrave and Laurence Olivier in ‘Oh! What a Lovely War’.
