June Whitfield worries about roles for older actors being cut

June Whitfield thinks roles for older actors are being axed.

The 88-year-old beauty – who starred in ‘Terry and June’ and ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ – believes there are not a lot of job opportunities around for her generation anymore because the show writers are all younger.

She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Generally there is a lack of stories for actors who are older. You get the impression that a lot of writers are relatively young and they don’t like writing about older people.

"But what the powers-that-be have never appreciated is it’s mainly older people who watch TV. Young people have got their entertainment plugged into their ears."

The ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ actress also worries every job she takes on will end up being her last.

She explained: "Every actor thinks that each job is their last. I’ve always thought, ‘Well, that’s probably it,’ and then something turns up and I stop clearing out the study or whatever."

However, June admits she still thinks about her own physical limitations first before accepting any role and she isn’t afraid to turn opportunities down.

She added: "A couple of years ago, I did turn something down in which they wanted me to play a nun in prison. The script said that she was knocked to the ground and I said, ‘I’m sorry but I can’t do that. I’ll never get up again.’ "
