Charli xcx’s top five songs

Charli xcx has shared her top five songs from her own archive.

The 33-year-old star – who has just released her eighth studio album Music, Fashion, Film – took a trip down memory lane to pick out her preferred films from her music catalogue.

During an interview with SPIN’s Lipps Service, she chose Stay Away, Next Level Charli, the 365 remix featuring Shygirl, Track 10 and Vroom Vroom.

Speaking about Stay Away, the lead single from 2011’s True Romance, Charli said: “I just love that song. I think for me it’s very sentimental, just because it was the first sort of official song I put out. I still to this day kind of go back and listen to it, and I’m kind of like, ‘Wow, like that was really cool.’”

The star explained Next Level Charli, the opener to 2019’s gives her a “euphoric” feeling every time she hears it, while she added about the 365 remix featuring Shygirl: “It’s kind of about not knowing when to leave the party, which I really have an issue with.”

The 365 remix features on the Brat remix album from October 2024, while Pop 2’s Track 10 and 2015’s Vroom Vroom were part of her setlist during the Brat era.

Charli also referenced her current Music, Fashion, Film era, choosing No One Lasts Forever as a bonus track.

The song – which is the final track on the album – deals with mortality surrounding art and fame and features recordings from a conversation Charli had with director David Cronenberg during a trip to visit him in Toronto.

Meanwhile, Charli recently admitted her new album Music, Fashion, Film took her “by surprise” because she was planning to take a break from music when inspiration struck.

The 33-year-old pop star revealed she wanted to step away from recording after releasing her record Brat in 2024 and working on the soundtrack to 2026 film Wuthering Heights, but she plunged back into the process once again after an idea “bubbled to the surface” and she couldn’t let it go.

During an appearance on the Pop Pod podcast, she explained: ‘After Brat and Wuthering heights, I really felt like I would not make music for a minute, that I would have some sort of creative pause …

“Especially mid-way through Wuthering Heights I was kind of like: ‘I wonder what I have to say … that’s left within me’.

“Then one day inspiration struck and hit me. And I’m a big believer in the idea that once you get that gift of inspiration, you kind of have to go with it because you never know how long it will last, whether you will ever get it again.

“So I really feel like when that happens, it almost like bubbled to the surface and I have to just get it out. So that’s what happened with this. “

She added: “It totally took me by surprise. I really was not thinking I would be making a record. But then one day I just had this thought and this idea that began, these initial seeds of Music, Fashion, Film and I just had to go with it.”
