Rhys Ifans sings on previously unheard Super Furry Animals track

Super Furry Animals have released a previously unheard track featuring Rhys Ifans.

The House of the Dragon star had a brief spell as the rock band’s original singer in the early 1990s before leaving in 1994 to pursue his acting career as Gruff Rhys took over.

Now, the band have dropped space-rock track Pocket Sam with Rhys on vocals from a session at Cardiff’s Grassroots Studio in 1993.

The song will feature on the bonus disc of the upcoming Precreation Percolation complication, due to be released on May 1.

Reflecting on the period after Ifans left, Gruff Rhys said in a press release: “The two-year Precreation Percolation was over and, for better or for worse, our lives would never be the same again.

“But we live to tell the tale. The music featured here features some of the residue of that foundational period.”

The special release will bring their debut EPs back to vinyl for the first time in three decades, along with a trio of new songs.

As well as Pocket Sam, the group are treating fans to AK Serenade and Choking On Your Lust on a 22 track CD and 31-track digital ‘bonus disc’ of material that the band produced prior to signing to Alan McGee’s Creation Records in 1995.

Elsewhere on the collection is a lost batch of six demos from a Crystal Palace studio in 1994 which have finally been found.

They reunited with archivist Kliph Scurlock and mastering engineer Donal Whelan, who helped pull together the track listing.

Another eight-track demo has been unearthed largely without vocals due to Ifans’ schedule at the time, but they have been revisited with select songs revived with some vocals added by Dafydd Ieuan.
