Lady Gaga returns to roots on new dance song Abracadabra

Lady Gaga has dropped the new dance song ‘Abracadabra’.

The ‘Poker Face’ hitmaker shared the striking music promo for the track from her upcoming seventh studio album ‘Mayhem’ during an ad break at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (02.02.25).

True to form, it’s a high-drama video with the 38-year-old star donning a bold red latex ensemble with a giant studded hat and opening the clip by declaring: “The category is dance or die.”

Sonically, it’s a return to 2011’s ‘Born This Way’ era.

Gaga had said in a statement about the follow-up to 2020’s ‘Chromatica’: “The album started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved.”

The album features previous singles ‘Disease’ and her Grammy winning Bruno Mars duet, ‘Die with a Smile’, which earned the pair the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance Grammy last night.

Bruno, 39, gushed in his acceptance speech: “Gaga, I’m so honoured to be a part of this song with you.

“I’m so honoured to have a small part in your giant musical legacy and I really truly believe that God gave us this song to sing together, so thank you so much.”

In her own speech, Gaga gave a moving tribute to the transgender community after President Donald Trump stripped back the freedoms of LGBTQ+ people in the US.

She said: “It is a privilege to be a songwriter, a producer, [and] a musician. It’s such an honour to sing for all of you and I just wanna say tonight, that trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love. Thank you.”

Gaga and Bruno also covered ‘California Dreamin” by The Mama and the Papas in tribute to Los Angeles amid the ongoing wildfires.

Meanwhile, Gaga recently teased that her new album “breaks a lot of rules”.

The ‘Bad Romance’ hitmaker will drop her new record ‘Mayhem’ on March 7, and she opened up on how all bets are off when it comes to the sound and genres, describing the collection as “utter chaos”.

She told the March 2025 issue of ELLE UK: “The record just feels good to me. It sounds good. It breaks a lot of rules and has a lot of fun.”

The megastar admitted she had to be “cutthroat” when it came to cutting down all the songs she’d written and settle on the 14 songs that make up the tracklist.

She explained: “‘Mayhem’ is about following your own chaos into whatever cranny of your life that it takes you to.

“And in that way, it was about following the songs. Writing as many songs as I did for this album was a labour of total love.

“And then you just have to be very cutthroat by the end.”
