Demi Lovato admits to being an ‘egotistical child star’

Demi Lovato was an “egotistical child star”.

The 31-year-old singer first found fame on the TV show ‘Barney and Friends’ during the early 2000s, and Demi has now acknowledged that her parents struggled to deal with her, and her attitude, at the time.

The chart-topping pop star told The Hollywood Reporter: “Having the child be the breadwinner almost inherently changes the dynamic of a family, and then it becomes, like, how do you discipline that breadwinner?

“I mean, they’d try to ground me, but I was an egotistical child star, and I thought I was on top of the world. I’d be like, ‘But I pay the bills,’ and what do you say to that?”

Last year, Demi claimed that the world has entered a “new era of child stardom”.

At the time, Demi announced that she was set to direct the Hulu documentary ‘Child Star’, and Demi is determined to shine a light on the issue.

The singer told PEOPLE: “I want this to give some insight into what it’s like to become a child performer, whether it’s acting or through music, but in the entertainment industry because my parents didn’t get that before I was a child star.”

What’s more, Demi believes social media has changed the landscape for young stars.

The singer – who has previously battled with addiction and suffered a near-fatal drug overdose in 2018 – said: “It’s also important because we’re now in the digital age with TikTok, YouTube and social media where children are becoming famous for unboxing toys, and it’s a new era of child stardom. So having that conversation is important as well.”
