‘Nerves never go away’: Griff can’t shake stage fright

Griff still suffers from terrible stage fright.

The 23-year-old singer has supported stars such as Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift in recent years and admits that the daunting feeling of playing to a packed crowd never disappears.

Speaking to the BBC, Griff said: “I think I’ve learned that nerves never go away. Like, I get sick to the stomach every single time.

“But it’s a unique high, having people sing (your words) back to you.

“Every now and again, without asking, a whole stadium would start putting their lights up. And that’s when you really feel like, oh my God, I’ve really got this audience.”

Griff released her debut album ‘Vertigo’ – which seems to be a break-up record – earlier this month and felt that the issue of relationship heartache was tough to address.

She said: “It might have happened, yes. But I think that’s naturally what you experience in your early 20s.

“It’s just tougher, maybe, than you think.

“Being let down or feeling rejection is harder to articulate than you can imagine.”

Griff opened for Taylor Swift as part of her Eras Tour shows at Wembley Stadium last month and was struck by the “surprisingly calm” atmosphere backstage at such a large-scale concert.

She said: “What was really nice about it is that every single person is aware that they’re part of history. There’s such a gratitude to being a part of it. And I think that’s a really beautiful atmosphere to be around.”

The ‘Black Hole’ singer admits that it would be “inspiring” if she got the chance to headline a stadium show of her own in the future.

Griff explained: “It’s weird, my goalpost of success keeps shifting the longer I’m in this.

“My ultimate goal is just to write the songs that outlive me – but if that involves performing in stadiums, then that’s super inspiring.”
