Louis Spence praises Conchita Wurst

Louie Spence says Conchita Wurst won Eurovision for her vocals, not her appearance.

While the drag queen won over the masses with her beard and ball gown when she represented Austria in the song contest earlier this month, the former ‘Pineapple Dance Studios’ star believes Conchita deserved to win because of her "great" singing voice and not just because of her daring look.

He said: "In fairness to Conchita, the song was good. It was uplifting and she had a good voice. It wasn’t like she was just some drag queen who went out there and sung some kind of crap.

"She had great vocals, it was a good song and she lived every moment of it. She was full of drama."

Flamboyant Louie – who appears on Channel 4 game show ‘Draw It!’ this week – is open about his own sexuality and admits that although he isn’t interested in campaigning for equal rights for the gay community himself, he is happy to see Conchita – whose real name is Thomas Neuwirth – strive for equality and represent a "minority".

He said: "People have different cultures. I’m not an activist in that way. I live my life how I live my life, I’m very open about who I am, and if people don’t accept me then they’re not a part of my life.

"I do think it’s a good thing for any kind of minority, whether it be gay, lesbian, transgender etc., though."

‘Draw It!’ airs weekdays at 4.30pm on Channel 4.
