Broadchurch creator: US remake is an experiment

‘Broadchurch’ creator Chris Chibnall has described the US remake of the hit series as an "experiment."

The writer, who is also working on ‘Gracepoint’ in America, thinks the producers have done an "incredible job" and he doesn’t find it unusual they are remaking the ITV murder mystery drama with original star David Tennant.

Speaking at the British Academy Television Awards at London’s Theatre Royal last night (18.05.14), he said: "The original show didn’t air to a large number of people at all in America. And the offer was there so [‘Gracepoint’] seemed like an interesting thing to be a part of. It’s an experiment and I think they’ve done a really incredible job.

"I’ve come from theatre and you have different productions of a text in theatre. It’s not unusual. I find it surprising that people find it surprising, actually."

But Chris did admit he is more focused on the eagerly-awaited second season of ‘Broadchurch’, rather than ‘Gracepoint’ in America, saying: "My main focus is on ‘Broadchurch’ [series] two, really, to be honest."

Chris picked up the award for Best Drama Series, as well as supporting the show’s stars Olivia Colman and David Bradley who were awarded gongs for Leading Actress and Supporting Actor on the night.

Speaking about the show’s BAFTA success, he said: "I’m in shock. I didn’t expect that at all. I came here very pessimistic tonight and I’m completely blown away."
