Prince Harry and Meghan dissolve Sussex Royal Foundation

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are dissolving their Sussex Royal Foundation after renaming it MWX Trading last year.

Documents filed with Companies House show that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan appointed a voluntary liquidator to start the process of shutting down the company.

The Sussex Royal title was used for both the their charity, and on their official social media accounts. But when they stepped back as senior members of the British royal family changed the name of their charity to MWX Trading in August 2020.

Although Harry, 36 and 39-year-old Meghan – who was previously known as Meghan Markle when she was an actress – have never officially announced what what MWX Trading stands for, the Daily Mail newspaper suggests it might stand for ‘Markle Windsor’ or ‘Mountbatten Windsor’.

The company was first launched in July 2019 after the Sussexes split with the foundation they previously shared with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and created a new charity called Archewell, named in honour of their son Archie Mountbatten Windsor.

Speaking previously about the origins of the Archewell Foundation moniker, they said: “Before SussexRoyal, came the idea of ‘Arche’ – the Greek word meaning ‘source of action’. We connected to this concept for the charitable organisation we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters.

“Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon. We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”

In 2020 it was reported that the Sussexes have applied to trademark Archewell for “television shows and motion picture films”.

They submitted documents to the Intellectual Property Office in London offering a wide range of potential ventures under the umbrella of the name of their planned charitable foundation.
