Love Island receives record number of applications

Laura Whitmore says ‘Love Island’ has received "more applications than ever", ahead of a potential 2021 return.

The host of the ITV2 dating show missed being able to head to the villa this summer, after this year’s series was axed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the appetite is still there from wannabe stars.

Asked if the show will be back next year, she told Tyla: "It’s really all depending on coronavirus. We’ve had more applications than ever – there’s a lot of people that want to do ‘Love Island’ and there’s a lot of people that want to watch it.

"I really missed not having ‘Love Island’ in lockdown – I’ve been watching the old series’ because I really needed to not watch the news.

"They’re so naughty! Hopefully we will be in a better situation next year."

However, Laura has been grateful for the amount of time she’s been able to spend with partner Iain Stirling – who narrates the reality show – with their hectic schedules making extended quality time together hard to come by.

She added: "It’s probably the most time we’ve ever spent together because we spend a lot of time apart with work.

"Even on ‘Love Island’, people always say ‘What’s it like working together?’ but we actually didn’t spend one day working together because he’s on the production side whereas I was either in London or the villa."

Last month, ITV boss Kevin Lygo discussed potential plans for next year’s ‘Love Island’, and admitted production could move from its usual Majorca location.

He said: "If we couldn’t do it in Majorca, well, maybe we’ll have to do like we’ve done with ‘I’m A Celebrity’: find a new place to do it or something, because then it would have been off a long time, and that would be a shame. We need it, and we are assuming it will return."

This comes after ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!’ has moved location from Australia to North Wales for this year’s series.

It was announced earlier this year that the 2020 ‘Love Island’ summer series had been cancelled due to Covid-19.
